Tips for an Amazing Maternity Sessions

I’ve been doing Maternity Sessions for quite some time and I truly love all the options that are available for clients. I always discuss with my clients their vision, for some they want something outdoors relaxed very candid, for others they want outdoors but they want a fitted dress and envision themselves like a goddess. Others want to capture their bodies and sexiness that comes with pregnancy. Whatever that might be, it deserves to be documented.

and Im all in for it!

I’ve gathered a list of the most common questions expecting parents have about maternity photography and I’ve answered them below!

Let me know if you have anything I can add!

Timing

This one is my most asked question!

When is the best time for a maternity photography session? In all honesty as soon or as late as you want hehe. But in the ideal world the best time is between 32-36 weeks. At this point, your bump is beautifully rounded, you're likely still feeling energetic, and you haven't reached the point where movement is just so uncomfortable. That said, I’ve done sessions as early as 28 weeks and as late as on my client’s due date, ha! Whatever works for you! Works for me and we will make you look beautiful and strong.

Bundles:

Can I schedule newborn and maternity sessions together? Well, girl absolutely! I mean is better that way because you get a better bang for your buck, plus you already know the photographer which is always super helpful. Also, this is a great way to capture your entire journey of motherhood.

I enjoy capturing Massachusetts families throughout their journey and seasons. I’ve had families I’ve been photographing since they were pregnant and now their little ones are almost 7 year olds 😭.

Location and Logistics:

Ok, so the next biggest question is: Where will the session take place?

Well this all depends on your vision and style and it varies. I’ve personally photographed in outdoor locations like parks, beaches, gardens or even backyards. Another option is always indoor settings like a rented studio or your own home. Its all about your vision, which we would perfect together. I have a list of Massachusetts locations that are beautiful for outdoor sessions and a few options for studios I can rent out as well. My favorite spots are in Acton, Jamaica Plain, Gloucester, and Waltham. I’m always open to suggestions of locations from my clients.

What time of day should we shoot? Golden hour, the two hours after sunrise or before sunset, provides a beautiful, soft light that's flattering for maternity photos. However, morning or later afternoon sessions can also work well, depending on the location and your schedule.

Preparation and Appearance:

What should I wear? Personally, I have a pretty amazing Client Closet with over 30 dresses in different styles, anywhere from fitted goddess-like dresses to flowy and relaxed dresses. My biggest advice is to choose clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable and also go along with your vision. Flowing dresses, fitted tops, and high-waisted pants are popular options. Stick to neutral colors or soft patterns to make your bump the star. Consider incorporating accessories like scarves, hats, flower crowns, or jewelry to add personality.

Should I get my hair and makeup done professionally? This is entirely up to you. Professional styling can enhance your look and make you feel pampered, but it's not essential and not everyone enjoys it. If you're comfortable doing your own hair and makeup, go for it! My advice for hair is to let it loose versus an up-do.

Other Concerns:

What if I'm feeling insecure about my body? Maternity photography is a celebration of motherhood and your changing body. As a photographer, I will focus on capturing your beauty and radiance, not any perceived flaws. Don't hesitate to communicate your concerns though, I’ll help you feel comfortable and confident.

Additional Tips:

Be sure to check the photographer of your choice portfolio to find a style you love.

Ask about their experience with maternity photography.

Schedule a consultation to discuss your vision and expectations.

Don't be afraid to ask questions!

I hope this information helps you plan your maternity photography session! Remember, it's a special time in your life, so relax, have fun, and enjoy capturing this beautiful moment.
